iPod Friday 3

Back to the tunes on a Friday, to a blog that has some of the most uplifting tracks you can find. Reverend Frost hails from one of our old neighborhoods (South of Hell, France), and can lay out some really heavy, um… stuff. Like Mahalia Jackson. In fact, I believe I’ve overheard Mahalia Jackson asking Jesus for help (in my head, of course) during a race or two, actually. Anyway, you can hear her and more at Spread the Good Word…

Nice job with ipod Friday. I'm so sick of commercial radio playing the same crap... At least with satellite radio there are a few more choices... But you have to pay.

Where is the next U2, or R.E.M. The groups that were the soundtrack of my youth.(maybe you don't like U2 or R.E.M, I don't know).

I just find the new stuff dribble, I'll keep looking, but I think I'm getting old.

I know what you mean about crap on the radio. Then again, our parents probably thought we listened to crap on the radio, too.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean there isn't more crap than ever. My gym plays one of the Sirius stations that loops 70's and 80's radio rock like Foreigner, Asia and Pat Benatar. I'd rather hear them than Ludicris or Avril Lavigne (I'm showing my age now). Though some of the lyrics back then were pretty laughable, at least they knew how to write songs. Songwriting ain't what it used to be. I like a good beat as much as anybody, but a decent melody goes a long way.

I remember hearing R.E.M.s first single 'Radio Free Europe' played on American Bandstand's Rate-a-Record, about 25 years ago. Dick Clark knew a decent song when he heard one! Anyway, I don't know where the next U2 or R.E.M. is coming from, both groups with a recognizable sound, a particular outlook, and a solid body of work. Oh well, guess I'll hear 'With or Without You' at the gym today... better that than 'My Humps'.
